SHIVAKSHAR PACHAN CHURNA

Shivakshar Pachan Churna is an Ayurvedic formulation, which is used for abdominal pain and bloating. It is also used in treatment of liver complications, anorexia, and abdominal pain due to gaseous distention. It is a polyherbal formulation that contains Ginger (Zingiber officinalis), Pepper (Piper nigrum), Long pepper (Piper longum), Ajamoda (Trachyspermum ammi), Krishnajeeraka (Nigella sativa), Jeeraka (Cuminum cyminum), Hingu (Ferula asafoetida), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Saidhava(Rock salt), Sarjakshara.
Since, the formulation has a wide therapeutic range, many marketed preparation has been fond to be adulterated with low potent drug/plant materials. Therefore present study was carried out to performs phytochemical profiling and Thin Layer Chromatography fingerprinting analysis of in-house and marketed formulation of Shivakshar Pachan Churna. Phytochemical evaluations revealed the presence of alkaloids, phenols, flavonoids, steroids, tannins in marketed as well as in in-house formulation. 

In fingerprinting analysis various solvent system were used according to their identified phytoconstituents such as: for alkaloid; Chloroform: Methanol (9:1), for flavonoid; Ethyl acetate: Butanol: Formic acid (5:4: 1), steroid; Toluene: Ethyl acetate: formic acid (7:2:1). From the result it was observed that, in-house formulation showed more flavonoid and alkaloids as compared to marketed formulation, while steroids were found to be more in marketed formulation. Thus, the study gives us a qualitative presentation of different marketed preparations of Shivakshar Pachan Churna and will help in selecting the best quality product from the market.
