NEEM AS HERBAL CONTRACEPTIVE


World population multiplied more rapidly than ever before and more rapidly than it will ever grow in the future there is an urgent need to provide safe and sustained effective fertility control to the world population.Contraceptives are the agent or device which are used to prevent the pregnancy. The demand for plants based medicines are increasing very fast in India. 

Azadirachtaindica commonly known as a Neem or Margosa. It contains the active chemical constituents such as Nimbine, Nimbinene, Nimbandiol, Nimbolide, Quercetin, Sodium Nimbinate (having a spermicidal effect). The plants showed Antiviral, Antifungal, Spermicidal, Insect repellent, Skin diseases, Anti-arthritic, Anti-inflammatory. Several studies shows that neem oil appears to be safe and very effective contraceptive with no side effects that on top of preventing pregnancy may also protect from sexually transmitted diseases.

A neem oil contraceptives would be safe, cheap and easily available. Many reports of research into the use of neem oil as a contraceptive most conducted in the eighties to nineties, conclude with prediction that neem will be widely accepted as a means of birth control. Cotton soaked in neem oil, was kept in vagina for 15 min. before intercourse these kills the sperms. Newer studies showed that neem oil contraceptives indeed kill sperm in the vagina within 20-40 sec. and remains active for 5 hours.It causes no irritation and discomfort like chemical based spermicidal foams. In addition neem oil act as a lubricant and it may also offer some protection from vaginal sexually transmitted diseases.
