Entada abyssinica Steud. ex A. Rich (Mimosaceae). is a tree that is found all over tropical Africa. The plant has been used for the treatment of bronchitis, coughs and to alleviate arthritic pains. The defatted methanolic extract of Entada abyssinica was evaluated for anti-inflammatory activity in acute and chronic models of inilannnation. The extract (50-200 mg/kg, p.o) exhibited dose-dependent and significant inhibition of the carrageenan-induced rat paw oedema in rats.
The extract (50-200 mg/kg, p.o) was also found to inhibit the acetic acid-induced vascular permeability in a dose-dependent fashion in mice using indomethacin as standard. A statistically significant inhibition of the carrageenan-induced paw oedema in rats was observed following oral administration of E. abyssinica leaf methanolic extract at 3 h. Oedema was inhibited by 32.3, 47.5 and 49.1% by 50, 100 and 200 MG/kg of extract. The plant reduced the degree of peritoneal increased vascular permeability produced by acetic acid in mice, the dye leakage being significantly reduced by 28.1 , 45.3 and 55.50 0 at oral doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg. The methanolic extract of Entada abyssinica showed the significant anti-inflammatory activity as compare to standard drug indomethacin.
