CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN HERBAL MEDICINES

Herbal medicines and their preparations have been widely used for the thousands of years in developing and developed countries. Herbal medicines are the synthesis of therapeutic experiences on generations of practicing physicians in indigenous system of medicines for over hundreds of years. There are also in great demand in the developed World all Health Care problems because of their efficacy safety and lesser side effects. India is sitting on a gold mine of well recorded and well practised knowledge of traditional herbal medicine. 



The Indian system of medicines that is Siddha Ayurveda and Unani mainly encompass herbal medicines along with herbal mineral formulations. The preparation are either as single herb or as collection of Herbs in composite formula. This may be the main reason why quality control of Oriental herbal drugs is more difficult than that of Western drugs. 

The quantity and quality of the safety and efficacy data on traditional medicines are far from sufficient to meet the criteria needed to support its use worldwide. This review article discusses these constraints and challenges in relation to conservation Science and Technology use of herbal medicine drug production sector safety and efficacy and also opportunities of herbal medicines in local and global level.

The present research was aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of Cinnamon oil extract found that it showed better antimicrobial activity. Also the research was carried out to formulate and evaluate the Hand wash gel containing Cinnamon oil. The anti-microbial activity of the formulated hand wash gel was tested against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacilius subtilis and pseudomonas vulagaris by spread plate techniques and the results obtained were compared with standard antibiotic.

However, adulteration and use of specious materials as substitutes have become a major apprehension for users and industry for reasons of safety and efficacy. Therefore, authentication of medicinal plants is of utmost importance. Morphological, anatomical, chemical and DNA markers solve the problem by differentiating the genuine material from the adulterants, substitutes and spurious drugs.
